If I were Mayor, cont.

First of all, good morning, and for once, it actually is morning.

So, it would be imperative that working with alderpersons would would have to be ramped up. They would be held accountable for their districts on a way in which they now are not. Like picking up garbage in vacant lots, etc.

I think looking at how Covid was originally addressed in the city makes my point. It is a known fact that the residents of Little Venezuela do not have access to the internet or news sources in general. So they were left in the dark, so to speak, about stay at home orders. (This of course, is my opinion, which I’m still allowed to have). If I were mayor, I would make sure that alderpersons got that info out, even if it meant knocking on doors, canvassing the area.

Next, I would thoroughly engage with corporate leaders in the region and religious institutions to help with mentoring and tutoring school age children and young adults. I know there are industries that do support Little Venezuela, but there are also many church affiliated efforts that one pretty much never hears about. I think, (once again, my opinion) that if the federal, state or local government isn’t providing the service, it doesn’t get much notice. I’ll go a step further, one of our state senators, a Republican, has a very successful program he advanced. No one even knows about it. Capitalism, church, conservatives Bad. Government Good.

In conclusion, I think a return to civic minded principles is what is called for, that we all ask ourselves, ‘What can I do to help?’ Instead of why isn’t the government taking care of this or that. This is the opposite of Socialism. Do you really want a government that “takes care of you?”

Hopefully, enough people will see that government can’t replace the generosity and kindness of people.

I rest my case. For now.
