And Good Morning,
It is actually nearly 5:00 pm and I am waiting for Sven to call and tell me that he would rather go out for pizza tonight than have something I prepare. No I am not insulted.
Anyway, yesterday seemed to be closet cleaning day on some of my favorite blogs, and some I’ve never heard of. So I thought I could tackle a closet, maybe the easiest one, the front hall closet. Does that description make it sound like a large closet off a grand foyer? Yes, it does, but it is not. It barely accommodates our coats, jackets and umbrellas. Not to mention that big box stuffed to the gills with sheet music I inherited from an aunt after her death. It’s been on that closet shelf since 1985. Yesterday I tackled the box.
Imagine my surprise when I opened it and found that, besides all the sheet music, were my little books I so enjoyed as a child. Eight of them. Five Christmas tree ornaments I made in grade school. My little instruction book on how to knit. Letters and pictures from my mother’s longtime deceased relatives. And the piece de resistance, the eulogy from my aunt’s funeral service.
As you can imagine, I spent a lot of time reading the letters that were addressed to my mother, from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. It was nice seeing pictures of old relatives I have heard of but never met, including one of my great grandfathers.
The little knitting book brought back happy memories of knitting slippers for everyone in the family and doll hats and booties. I was about eight when I started knitting. I felt so accomplished.
The eulogy was a little bitter sweet. My aunt was a nun, music teacher, and church organist. And the stand-in for my mother who died three months before my first child was born. She was so kind and helpful to this new mother, who was still mourning the loss of her own mother. I still have the baby blanket she embroidered, because she knew if my mother had lived, that’s what she would have done. I hope I thanked her profusely.
I have to go now and get ready to go out for pizza! Sven came through!
Ciao!
